This table holds the sky as it stood when you took your first breath. Each planet sits in a sign, within a particular nakshatra (a lunar mansion, a smaller constellation within the sign), and in a specific house of your chart. The Lagna, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, is the door through which everything else is read. Start there. Then let your eye move through the rest, planet by planet, the way you might walk through a house you are visiting for the first time, noticing who is in each room.

Every house in your chart has a ruler, the planet that governs the sign placed there. Where that ruler sits tells you something important: it connects two areas of your life, the house it governs and the house where it lands. These connections are the threads that weave the chart into a whole. When you read this table, notice the threads. Drishti means gaze. Every planet in your chart looks directly across to the house opposite it, and what it sees, it influences. Four planets carry additional vision: Mars also gazes back toward the 4th and forward to the 8th house from itself. Jupiter reaches the 5th and 9th. Saturn reaches the 3rd and 10th. The nodes, Rahu and Ketu, reach the 5th and 9th. Through drishti, a planet is felt in places where it does not physically sit, like the warmth of a fire reaching into the next room.

The chara karakas are a way of seeing which planets carry the weight of specific roles in your life. They are ranked by degree: the planet that has traveled furthest through its sign at your birth carries the soul's own lesson. The one least far carries the theme of partnership. Between them, each planet takes on a role: counsel, sibling, mother, father, child, kinship. Read this as the cast your soul gathered around itself for this lifetime, each one carrying a particular thread of your story.

Vimshottari divides a full life of 120 years into nine planetary seasons, each governed by a different planet, in a fixed order. The season you were born into is determined by the nakshatra (lunar mansion) your Moon occupied at birth. From there, the cycle unfolds forward through your life. Each great season is called a Mahadasha, and within it, smaller seasons called Antardashas repeat the cycle of nine at a finer scale. The card below shows where you stand in this cycle right now. And the table at the bottom lists every Mahadasha with its dates, so you can trace the larger rhythm of your life from beginning to end.

A tithi is one of the thirty phases of the Moon, measured by the angle between the Sun and the Moon in the sky. The tithi under which you were born carries a particular quality, a particular deity, a particular energy that is yours for life. Each year, when the Sun and Moon return to the exact same angle they held at your birth, you re-enter that quality. This moment is called the tithi pravesh. Because the lunar month is shorter than the solar month, this date shifts about eleven days from your solar birthday each year. Some astrologers read the chart of this moment to understand the year ahead.

Your rising sign is the most important angle of your chart, the lens through which everything else is read. Vedic astrology adds a small family of additional lagnas, each one offering a different perspective. Three of them are time-based, calculated from the Sun's position at sunrise on your birthday, each moving at a different speed. The other twelve are called Arudhas, and they show you how each area of your life appears to the outside world. Together, these additional lagnas let you see the chart from many angles, like walking around a sculpture rather than looking at it from one side only.

The sage Jaimini taught a beautiful method for discovering the Ishta Devata, the chosen deity of the soul. It begins with the Atmakaraka, the planet carrying your soul's deepest lesson. That planet is placed in the Navamsa chart, where it lands in a sign called the Karakamsa. From the Karakamsa, we look to the 12th house, the place of liberation, of release, of the soul's final direction. The deity governing that 12th sign becomes your Ishta. Three traditional ways of reading this are offered below, each one naming the same divine presence through a different lens. You may find that one of them speaks to you more directly than the others. Trust that recognition.

The Panchang is the five-limbed Vedic calendar, and it describes not just when you were born, but the quality of that moment. Each limb measures something different. The Tithi counts the angle between the Sun and the Moon, revealing the lunar day and its deity. The Vara is the weekday, carrying the influence of its planetary lord. The Nakshatra is the lunar mansion the Moon was passing through, the star-field of your emotional nature. The Yoga is a combined measure of the Sun and Moon's positions, carrying its own distinct quality. The Karana is the half-tithi, the finer texture within the lunar day. Together they paint a portrait of the day you arrived, each limb adding a color.

Varna describes the soul's natural mode of action, the way you are most naturally inclined to serve and to contribute. It is read from the sign your Moon occupies at birth. The twelve signs fall into four groups by element, and each element carries a varna. Fire signs carry the Kshatriya temperament: leadership, protection, the will to act. Earth signs carry the Vaishya temperament: stewardship, trade, the care of resources. Air signs carry the Shudra temperament: craft, skill, practical service. Water signs carry the Brahmin temperament: contemplation, devotion, the tending of inner life. These are not social classes. They are qualities of soul, each one equally sacred, each one essential to the whole.

Jaimini's yogas are different from the planetary yogas you may have encountered elsewhere. They are formed by the chara karakas, the soul's own cast of significators, in relation to the Arudha Lagna (your public image), the Upapada (your marriage), and the time-based lagnas. Each yoga is a small teaching your chart is offering about how your purpose, your relationships, and your standing in the world want to unfold. Below are the yogas present in your chart.
